Music

I've been influenced by a number of very different composers. From Eastern European giants: Stravinsky, Bartok, Ligeti, Lutoslawski to electro-acoustic contemporaries such as Faust Romitelli, Kaija Saariaho, Karlheinz Essl, Ake Parmerud to jazz avant-garde geniuses: Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk ...  Traditional Balkan music is woven into my DNA, as is my interest in technology and creative utilisation of computers in music.

Incomplete recording of the workshop with Ensemble Interface in Dec 2015, conducted by Hans Kretz. The composition is inspired by ‘Rote Messe’ from Schoenberg’s ‘Pierrot Lunaire’ and traditional Ganga singing indigenous to Herzegovina region.

Vexilla for Bass Clarinet, Violin, Violoncello and Video Projector by Slavko Zagorac

Vexilla were flag-like objects used as a military standard by units in the ancient Roman army. Later on the meaning of the word extended to represent any object such as a relic or icon carried as a standard into a battle. This piece is an exploration of the emotional and rational responses to various flags I encountered throughout my lifetime, from the fervent teenage patriotism to a deep distrust of any ceremony which requires enthusiastic flag waving. Violation (the Left, the Right and the Centre)

Composition for Viola, explores tensions of the sound movement within the stereo field. All sections start with the sound moving from the Left to the Right. In most of the sections the sound position eventually gets balanced across the stereo field. However, in last section the battle of the opposite direction movements commences and the sound is pushed back where it started. Viola masterfully played by Benedict Taylor.

Uma Libidt

Piece for clarinet and MAX MSP, recorded as live performance. The title is anagram of Ad Libitum and represents intention to combine improvised and ordered/composed. Clarinet expertly played by Tom Jackson.
